Growing Health in a Circle: How Keyhole Gardens Are Feeding Families and Fighting Malnutrition
In the heart of many homes across Kamuli, something powerful is taking root , and it’s shaped like a keyhole. The keyhole garden is also known as the kitchen garden because the estimated distance should be two meters from and should face the kitchen. Under the CASCADE project (Catalyzing Strengthened Policy Action for Healthy Diets and Resilience), we are turning simple backyard spaces into life-saving gardens.
Welcome to the world of keyhole gardens small, circular gardens that are changing lives, one household at a time.

What’s a Keyhole Garden?
Think of it as a garden with a secret. Shaped like a keyhole and built with local materials like bricks, stones, wood plastic bottles, sticks, banana stems, this smart garden has a compost basket at the center that feeds the soil using kitchen waste and water. It’s simple, smart, and sustainable. Even better it thrives in dry conditions, grows food year-round, and fits right next to your home.
And here’s the best part: a well-maintained keyhole garden can last up to three years, providing a reliable, long-term source of fresh food for your family.

Why It Matters for Women and Children
With the CASCADE objective of improving food security and reduce malnutrition for 1 million women of reproductive age and children under five. Keyhole gardens are doing just that by:
- 🌿 Bringing fresh vegetables to the doorstep, boosting daily nutrition with every harvest.
- 💧 Saving water and surviving tough climates, perfect for rural households facing drought and poor soils.
- 👩🏾🌾 Empowering women to grow, feed, and lead — all from a small patch of soil.
- 🧒🏽 Feeding children with homegrown goodness, giving them the nutrients they need to grow strong and healthy.

More Than a Garden — A Circle of Resilience
In every keyhole garden, there’s more than just spinach or tomatoes growing. There’s resilience, independence, and hope. Families are learning to grow their own food, bounce back from climate shocks, and build healthier futures especially for women and their children.
